When It Comes To Hiring, Common Sense Isn’t So Common
While it is difficult to teach common sense to man or machine, apparently people are still trying, especially when hiring employees.
Whether technically challenged or technically adept, here is a real example of AI’s lack of common sense. A text is spellchecked and automatically assumes “lets” is a misspelling for “keys”. The surrounding message would make perfect sense for the use of the word “keys” to the author, though the word “lets” apparently made more sense to the algorithm. After all, the keyboard has the keys right next to each other, so on some level, it made more sense to the application of AI to completely change the sentence. The author was not amused and had to manually correct.
Common Sense Still Matters at Work
The point is, things like common sense; empathy; social interaction; and critical thinking are examples of desirable workplace skills. Hiring the right person for the job requires intuition on the part of the manager. While the applicant has the requisite skills, can they think of which one to apply in a moment’s notice?

Skills Are Easy To List…Common Sense Is Hard To Spot
So how do managers know if an applicant has common sense? Does the hair on their neck stand up when the right new employee walks in? It sure would help if it did, HR compliance for a wrong hire is costly to an organization. According to Google Gemini, “The Society For Human Resource Management (SHRM) estimates that the cost of a bad hire can range from 50% to several times (up to 5x) an employee’s annual salary.”
Engaging with a larger organization can make hiring and retention tools available to small businesses. Many wise business owners partner with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) for access to volume discounts on recruiting websites; employee training; and HR information systems to manage payroll and employee data. Using a PEO provides better benefits like health insurance and 401(k) retirement plans, to attract and retain employees with common sense.
